February 22 — May 10, 1998
Magasin, Grenoble (France)

British designers Dunne & Raby use design as a medium to stimulate discussion and debate amongst designers, industry, and the public about the social, cultural, and ethical implications of existing and emerging technologies. I invited them to create a project in the public cafe of the Magasin, where for one month, they placed a “Truth Phone”, a device that detects the alterations of one’s voice; thus, it can determine if someone is telling the truth or not. Visitors were invited to make phone calls to anyone and ask them questions, eventually instilling in some cases the doubt that somebody may have lied to them.
